Scarlett Johansson talks about her return to Broadway with ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof VEDIO
Scarlett Johansson is returning to Broadway, starring as Maggie in the newest production of Tennessee Williams’ legendary play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. TheHitchcock actress talked about her role, noting that the character’s sexuality is often over exaggerated.
Maggie was played by Elizabeth Taylor in the film version and actresses such as Anika Noni Rose, Ashley Judd and Kathleen Turner have tackled the character in the past. While they embraced the character’s sexuality, Johansson said that this shouldn’t be the primary focus when talking about Maggie.
“I think her sexuality is often overplayed and over-appreciated. It's such an unimportant part of this story,” Johansson told. “I mean, it comes with the circumstance, of course, and the settling and the words – that's already there. There's no need to drape yourself all over the stage and roll around in a satin sheet.”
In her interview with USA Today, she added that “...it's best to ignore (Maggie)'s sexuality, because it's already there in the play...I mean, she's in the Mississippi Delta, with all this humidity, and she's young and wearing a slip.”
Johansson said that the part of Maggie that interests her the most is "her determination. She has this drive in her, this life force, that is at times almost biblical. I don't think about Maggie as coming from her loins. I think of her as coming from her gut.”
Despite Johansson’s thoughts on the characters, the marketing campaign for the film is certainly focusing on her looks. notes that the print campaign has featured a sultry black and white image of Johansson reclining in a white slip.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is currently in previews at the and opening night is set for Jan. 18. Tony winner Rob Ashford directed and Benjamin Walker plays Brick, Maggie’s husband.
Johansson also told USA Today about her role in the Marvel cinematic universe as Black Widow. She will make an appearance in the next Captain America film. She loves that the role forces her to work hard as an actress.
